Already operate a live HLS stream? Live Relay can put a TransferSize playback link in front of that source. Think of it as another delivery step between your existing stream and its audience. Prepare the source, confirm your publishing permission, and test the full journey before the event.

One practical example

Rehearsing a live conference session

Your conference production team already provides an HTTPS HLS stream. Before the session, check that the publishing agreement permits the relay, add the authorized source, and test the playback link on the devices attendees will use. Rehearse for long enough to catch expiring source access. During the event, one person watches the source and another checks what viewers can actually play.

Prepare the work

Make the delivery easy to understand

Start with rights, not the URL

Being able to open an .m3u8 address does not give permission to relay it. Confirm who owns the stream, which territories and devices are allowed, how long the event may be available, and whether your agreement permits delivery through TransferSize.

Bring a healthy HLS origin

The source must already serve valid HTTPS playlists and segments with compatible codecs and the quality levels viewers need. Live Relay does not repair missing segments, change codecs, add captions, create thumbnails, or generate a lower-bitrate fallback.

Keep source access stable

Any signed address, token, header, firewall rule, or allowlist needed by the origin must remain valid for the relay. Test the complete source long enough to catch rotating URLs, token expiry, discontinuities, and playlist updates before viewers arrive.

Plan the whole playback chain

A successful source check is not an event plan. Test the relay URL on the real viewer devices and networks, confirm the current bitrate and traffic allowance, and monitor the encoder, origin, relay, player, and audience reports while the stream is live.

Prepare a safe failure path

Keep direct access to the encoder and origin, know who may stop the relay, and have a message ready for viewers. A relay link is only one access layer; it cannot prevent an authorized viewer from recording what their device can play.

Make the run sheet part of the setup

Record the event window, the person who controls the encoder, the person who can change the source, and the person who updates viewers. Include the link you have tested and a simple message to use if playback is interrupted. A successful setup check is the beginning of the rehearsal, not the end of the event plan.

  • Stop the relay when the event or your publishing permission ends.

HLS uses playlists that point to small media segments. Live Relay passes through an existing supported source; it does not encode a camera feed, repair missing segments, change codecs, or create additional quality levels. Source access must remain valid throughout the event.

Can I relay a public stream I found online?

No. Public access is not publishing permission. You must own the source or have explicit authority to republish it.

Will Live Relay fix a broken playlist or unsupported codec?

No. It passes through the existing HLS source without transcoding or repairing it.

Can the relay guarantee an uninterrupted event?

No. The encoder, origin, network, relay, player, and viewer connection can all fail, so monitor them and keep a backup communication plan.
